The Sowden House in Los Feliz

5121 Franklin Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027

5 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms

This stunning Architectural homes is known as the Sowden House and is known as one of Lloyd Wright’s most important works. The home is located in the popular LA neighborhood known as Los Feliz, and reflects Wright’s philosophies as a landscape architect. Lloyd Wright is the son of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright who has also designed some incredible Architecture around Los Angeles.

The home’s unique style features an extensive use of textile block creating the iconic Mayan style fa├žade. The windowless main entrance lies below a canted cyclopean mass of zigzag rock that hangs like the roof of some antediluvian cave. After climbing a dark stairway, the home’s stylings change a bit and offer a high, airy living space surrounding a long outdoor courtyard lined with columns – a subtle, but appreciated change from the entryway. The weathered wave-motifs and twining vines play on the consistent theme throughout the home and property.

Wright spent a great deal of time in the details of this home – emphasizing the elements of nature in an open floor plan where every room communicates via the central courtyard.

Extensive restorations from 2002-2009 were done on the home by Xorin Balbes, and the home now accommodates modern living while preserving the Architects master work.
